Call for Science Proposals - Budapest Neutron Centre (deadline 15 April)

The Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC), the largest research infrastructure in Central Europe operates a 10MW research reactor and provides the national and international user community excellence-based open access to the instrumentation.

The BNC user program currently includes 14 (thermal and cold neutron-based) experimental stations, to carry out research in physics, chemistry, biology, materials, medical and cultural heritage sciences. We conduct around 180 experiments per year, involving 140 scientists from Hungary and abroad. BNC also provides access to special facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation.

Instruments offered by the BNC (https://www.bnc.hu/instruments) are:

MTEST: 4-circle Material Test Diffractometer
PSD: Powder Diffractometer with Position Sensitive Detector
TOF-ND: High Resolution Time-Of-Flight Powder Diffractometer

SANS-YS: Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument
FSANS: Focusing TOF Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument
GINA: Cold Neutron Beam Reflectometer with Polarization Option

TAST/HOLO: Thermal Neutron Triple Axis Spectrometer
ATHOS: Cold neutron triple axis spectrometer

RAD: Static/Dynamic thermal-neutron and X-ray Imaging Station

NAA: Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis
PGAA: Cold Beam Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis
DÖME: Low-Level Gamma-Spectrometer
NIPS: Neutron-Induced Prompt Gamma-ray Spectroscopy
NORMA: Neutron Optics and Radiography for Material Analysis

BAGIRA-4: Reactor irradiation loop
BIO: Biological irradiation channel

To learn more about science at BNC, please visit https://www.bnc.hu.

In order to get beam time at a BNC instrument, users must prepare and submit an experimental proposal. The proposal template may be downloaded from the BNC website at http://www.bnc.hu/sites/default/files/BNC_reg_prop_form.doc to fill in and submit electronically via e-mail to useroffice@bnc.hu. We encourage potential users to contact the appropriate instrument responsible(s) when planning experiments and writing proposals. They will be glad to assist you and will help you to submit your proposal in time. Contact details of the instrument responsibles are available at https://www.bnc.hu/responsibles.

Proposals will be reviewed by the international User Selection Panel for technical feasibility, safety and potential for high-impact science. Users for approved projects must complete access and training requirements prior to beginning their experiments.

Submitted experimental proposals involving user-programme instruments of BNC will next be evaluated from

Tuesday, 16 April, 2019.

The principal investigators will be notified about the referees' decision before 31 May, 2019. Beam times assigned as a result of this call will be scheduled between September 2019 through January 2020.
